For the first time, Bloomberg Philanthropies has announced a $200 million initiative to support U.S. Mayor’s efforts to address the pressing issue of climate change.
Dubbed “Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities”, the initiative empowers 25 cities across the country to lead the way in creating low carbon, resilient, and prosperous communities.

Why This Matters
Cities are at the epicenter of climate change’s disproportionate impact on poor and marginalized communities. Local leaders are at the forefront of this battle, and we recognize the critical role they play. That’s why we’re proud to announce a new round of deep support for selected cities, led by the world’s most influential philanthropists. Here are the key points to know:
- Historic Federal Funding: With record levels of federal funding, cities have the power to deliver transformative solutions. The Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities initiative aims to make sure cities take full advantage of this opportunity.
- Partnerships for Impact: The initiative will be implemented in partnership with the following key partners:
- PolicyLink: National Institute for Equal Opportunities for All, a research and action institute dedicated to racial and economic justice.
- Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University: A place where people come together to solve public problems.
- Natural Resources Defense Council: Leading environmental law firm.
- Transformative Solutions: The focus areas are the buildings and transport sectors. These cities will lead the way with sustainable infrastructure, smart buildings and clean transportation.
Bloomberg’s Legacy of Climate Leadership
This action builds on more than 15 years of Mike Bloomberg’s commitment to climate change. His faith in the power of city and state leaders has yielded remarkable results.
- American Cities Climate Challenge (ACCC): Started in 2019, the ACCC provides resources and leadership to 25 of America’s biggest cities. Together, they passed 54 key policies and initiated 71 climate action programs, with an estimated 74 Mt CO2 reduction by 2030.
- Local Infrastructure Hub: Launched in 2022, the Local Infrastructure Hub provides pro-bono experience to more than 1,200 municipalities through Bloomberg Philanthropies, which has already secured over $1 billion in Federal funding for critical infrastructure projects.
The Intersection of Climate and Equity
Founder and CEO of Bloomberg LP, Michael R. Bloomberg believes that addressing climate change and creating stronger, fairer cities go together. By partnering with America’s mayors on climate action, this initiative seeks to create a “win-win” situation that benefits all communities, regardless of where they come from.
As the world faces unprecedented pressure to act on climate change, the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities (BAC) initiative is a shining example of what it means to work together, innovate, and lead the charge for a sustainable future.
